This hike starts at the North Siouxon Creek Trailhead which is also the south end of the Mitchell Peak Trail. Following the Mitchell Peak Trail for about 5.5 miles the route offers a spur down to the falls. Or for the more adventurous a steep climb up to Mitchell Peak makes for a good two day backpacking adventure.

For the most part, the trail hugs the north wall of the gorge high above the North Fork of the Siouxon. In 2014, the trail was in fair condition but definitely had some erosion concerns. Small streams and rivulets cut across the trail in several locations.

While most of these can be easily hopped over, others must be creatively maneuvered, and it's highly likely that you'll be getting your feet wet. There are also a few notable log-crossings over more robust sections of creek. A well-used firepit is near the first of these log crossings at the point where you finally come in contact with the N. Siouxon. On some maps, this is the junction with an alternate point of entry, but the footbridge which once spanned the creek is long gone, rendering the alternate trailhead obsolete.

There is also a well-established campsite at the five mile mark, just beyond the sign which marks the short spur trail down to Black Hole Falls. Continuing upward past this camp will bring you to the junction of the old Mitchell Peak Trail.

Getting There

From Yale Bridge Road (highway 503), turn east at Healy Road, which becomes FR 54 at Tumtum Mountain. Follow FR 54 for about eight and a half miles before veering uphill to the north at the first yellow gate marking the recreational easement.

The first uphill climb is a little rough as it's been graded with larger rocks, but after passing the second yellow gate, signed to say a Discover Pass is required, the road evens out for a much smoother ride.

Zigzag up a northeasterly climb, cross a couple bridges, navigate a couple questionable forks in the road to an unmarked trailhead, recognizable only by the loglined pullout at the elbow in the road and a bullet-riddled "Discover Pass req'd" sign.
