If you're looking for a place to stretch your legs while traveling over Highway 20 near Sherman Pass, the Log Flume interpretative trail is the perfect choice.

From the parking lot and outhouse, find the peavey wielding statue next to the paved trail-bed. Begin your journey into the Kettle Range's past by following the path clockwise as it makes a loop through the trees and along Sherman Creek. Interpretative signs along the route illustrate the dangers of early logging operations, as well as provide information on how the surrounding terrain has been shaped by wildfire. There are a few remains along the trail of what was once a 5-mile long log flume.

While absorbing the human and natural history lesson, don't forget to watch for the region's flora and fauna. The green understory is punctuated with purple lupine and scarlet Indian paintbrush, among other wildflowers; deer and moose can sometimes be spotted near Sherman Creek.

The interpretive loop is less than a half mile, but the hike can be extended by taking the adjacent Sherman Creek trail. High runoff during the spring of 2013 caused a temporary closure of a portion of this trail that connects the Log Flume site to Canyon Creek campground 0.8 miles upstream, so be prepared to turn back should the trail repairs not be complete.
