This short hike boasts a lot of bang for your buck. At just 2.1 miles, the loop won't take too long, but you'll enjoy views of an impressive river, rocky outcroppings, and some expansive views.

Start out by hiking across a swinging bridge at Bowl & Pitcher. This impressive bridge was built -- like so many structures on trails in the Spokane area -- by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). From the bridge, you can see large basalt structures rising out of the river as you cross into Riverside State Park.

Once you're across the bridge, decide whether you're going to head upstream or downstream. Heading downstream, you'll pass rapids on the Spokane River, a CCC camp (perhaps where they were staged while building the bridge) and a basalt bench with views of the river. Choosing the upstream path offers an closer look at the basalt formations in and near the river.

Whichever way you go, you'll find a route across the river and back to the trailhead, creating a loop trip.
