A welcome change of pace from some of the busier nearby trails, this North Cascades ridge hike offers the same stunning views minus the crowds.

Best accessed in summer and fall in order to take full advantage of wildflower- and berry-filled alpine meadows, be prepared to share the trail with climbers using it as an approach for a summit attempt of Mt. Shuksan via the Sulphide Glacier.

The trail starts easily on an old logging road for the first 1.5 miles, then begins switchbacking up through a previously-timbered forest area, getting steeper and a little bit more dense after about 2 miles. One more mile of upward hiking will have you breaking out onto Shannon Ridge at 4,600 feet, where astounding views of Mt. Shuksan, Mt. Baker and Baker Lake await. Meander along the ridge for 0.5 miles and cross over into the National Park boundary.

Campsites are available along the ridge. Bring a blue bag to properly dispose of human waste, and remember to practice other responsible Leave No Trace ethics.
